Hank Aaron hits 715th home run, passes Babe Ruth

That same year, MLB introduced the Hank Aaron Award to recognize the top offensive players in each league. He was named a 2010 Georgia Trustee by the Georgia Historical Society in recognition of accomplishments that reflect the ideals of Georgia's founders. With the eyes of the entire nation on him, Aaron hit a pitch from the Dodgers’ Al Downing over the left field wall to pass Babe Ruth and make baseball history. A 6-foot, 180-pounder, Aaron broke Babe Ruth's hallowed home run mark on April 8, 1974, slugging his record 715th off Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Al Downing in the fourth inning as 50,000-plus fans celebrated in Atlanta. His final home-run ball ended up having an interesting history. Richard Arndt, a part-time groundskeeper at County Stadium, caught the ball and tried to return it to Aaron after the game but was told Aaron was unavailable to see him.

They were escorted out of the park by police soon after their moment with Aaron and spent the night in jail. However, both later got to reunite with Aaron, once in 1994 on the 20th anniversary of the home run and again in 2010. On April 8, 1974, Aaron's Braves faced off against the Dodgers at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. The opposing starter was Al Downing, a veteran who, like Aaron, was nearing the end of his career and, also like Aaron, wore No. 44. It had been a long winter for Aaron, who ended the 1973 season on the cusp of the record with 713 career home runs.

MLB also awards the Hank Aaron Award to the best hitter in each league as voted on by the fans and the media. To the end of his life, he remained a champion of minority hiring and inclusion in the sport he loved. In October 2018, the league renamed the Elite Development Invitational, the largest developmental program for minority players, in honor of Aaron. After Robinson broke Major League Baseball's color barrier in 1947, a player of Aaron's caliber wasn't going to escape notice for long. He signed a $10,000 contract with the Milwaukee Braves, with whom he made his big league debut two years later. After touching home plate he was carried off the field by his teammates. It is as of yet the only pennant-clinching walk-off home run in major league history in a non-playoff regular-season game. Milwaukee went on to win the World Series against the New York Yankees, the defending champions, 4 games to 3. Aaron did his part by hitting .393 with three homers and seven RBIs. He led the Braves to another pennant, but this time they lost a seven-game World Series to the Yankees.

Arndt wanted to personally present the ball to the Hall of Famer. Instead, the Brewers offered Arndt a photo opportunity along with a signed ball and one of the slugger’s bats. To add insult to injury, the club deducted $5 from Arndt’s final paycheck for keeping the ball. Minutes before bidding was to start, a family friend of the New York Yankees outfielder told the auctioneer the ball was a fake, claiming Mantle’s widow, Merlyn, owned the true 500th ball. The Judge auction is expected to run smoothly, without the screwballs marking some colorful past sales. "This is probably the most famous baseball in the world, and it should set a record for the most valuable baseball ever sold," Goldin told Stewart Varney.

Letters poured into the Braves offices, as many as 3,000 a day for Aaron. Some wrote to congratulate him, but many others were appalled that a Black man should break baseball's most sacred record. He didn't try to inflame the atmosphere, but he didn't keep his mouth shut, either, speaking out against the league's lack of ownership and management opportunities for minorities. "On the field, Blacks have been able to be super giants," he once stated. "But, once our playing days are over, this is the end of it and we go back to the back of the bus again."

Aaron showed little bitterness that the power mark was surpassed in a modern era that has emphasized long balls and has been helped along by better training methods and even performance-enhancing drugs. And former President Jimmy Carter, a native of Plains, Georgia, on Friday called Aaron a "breaker of records and racial barriers." Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp ordered flags at all state buildings and grounds lowered to half-staff in honor of Aaron for "his important work to advance civil rights and create a more equal, just society." On January 21, 2007, Major League Baseball announced the sale of the Atlanta Braves. Aaron himself downplayed the "chase" to surpass Babe Ruth, while baseball enthusiasts and the national media grew increasingly excited as he closed in on the 714 career home runs record. Aaron received thousands of letters every week during the summer of 1973, including hate mail; the Braves ended up hiring a secretary to help him sort through it. Mickey Owen, the team's manager, helped Aaron with his batting stance. Until then, Aaron had hit most pitches to left field or center field, but after working with Owen, Aaron was able to hit the ball more effectively all over the field. During his stay in Puerto Rico, Owen also helped Aaron transition from second base to the outfield.

In 1994, Arndt got Aaron to sign the ball at a baseball card show, without telling the Home Run King that he was signing "the ball," FanGraphs said. In 2007, Cicero told the Texas Journal of The Wall Street Journal he sold the ball to an investor group in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The price was "well into the six figures." Later reports listed the price at $144,000. Estimates say the ball will fetch more than Mark McGwire’s 70th homer from the 1998 season.

His mates decided that enough was enough in the bottom of the seventh, as the Boomer and the Hammer went to work. Aaron, however, didn't stay away from the Braves after he hung up his bat, eventually moving into the team's front office, where he served as executive vice president. He retired at the end of the 1976 season with 755 home runs and a career average of .305. When Bonds hit his 756th home run in San Francisco in 2007, the Giants played a videotaped congratulatory message from Aaron.

Career Stats, Facts and History of Hank Aaron

He got straight to business in 1974, hitting the first pitch he saw from Cincinnati’s Jack Billingham for a three-run home run on Opening Day. Aaron’s first home in the major leagues was a solo shot in the sixth inning off off Vic Raschi of the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium I. Aaron was just 20 years old and playing in his seventh game. The number of home runs hit by Hank Aaron the all-time leader was what? Henry Louis "Hank" Aaron, the Hall of Fame slugger whose 755 career home runs long stood as baseball's golden mark, has died. He broke his habit of hitting cross-handed and adopted the standard hitting technique. By the end of the season, he had performed so well that the league made him the unanimous choice for Rookie of the Year. Although he appeared in just 87 games, he scored 89 runs, had 116 hits, nine home runs, and 61 RBIs. During his minor league experience, he was very homesick and faced constant racism, but his brother, Herbert Jr., told him not to give up the opportunity. Aaron had seven siblings, including Tommie Aaron, who played major-league baseball with him. He appeared briefly in the Negro American League and in minor league baseball before starting his major league career.

After this, Aaron returned to school to finish his secondary education, attending the Josephine Allen Institute, a private high school in Alabama. During his junior year, Aaron joined the Prichard Athletics, an independent Negro league team, followed by the Mobile Black Bears, another independent Negro league team. While on the Bears, Aaron earned $3 per game ($30 today), which was a dollar more than he got while on the Athletics. Hall of Famer Henry “Hank” Aaron was the home run king, breaking the home run record, with 755 in his career. He played 21 of 23 seasons with the Braves franchise but later worked for the team in management.

Professional career

The board appears to have been convinced, as Aaron was not drafted. In 1958, Aaron's wife noted that during the offseason he liked "to sit and watch those shooting westerns". The Braves purchased Aaron's contract from the Clowns for $10,000, which GM John Quinn thought was a steal, as he stated that he felt that Aaron was a $100,000 property.

Over the next 122 games, Aaron batted .280 with 13 homers before he suffered a fractured ankle on September 5. He then changed his number to 44, which would turn out to look like a "lucky number" for the slugger. Aaron would hit 44 home runs in four different seasons, and he hit his record-breaking 715th career home run off Dodgers pitcher Al Downing, who coincidentally also wore number 44. One of the greatest baseball players in history, he spent 21 seasons with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves in the National League and two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League .

Appearances on Leaderboards, Awards, and Honors

He started off the next year with a bang by tying Ruth’s mark on Opening Day against the Reds. In 2022, a recording of the WSB broadcast of the April 8, 1974 Braves-Dodgers game in which Aaron hit his 715th home run was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry. In May of the same year, Tulane University gave Aaron a posthumous honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, the first posthumous honorary degree ever awarded by the university. It was presented during the university's unified commencement ceremony and was accepted on his behalf by his widow Billye. Aaron dedicated the new exhibit "Hank Aaron-Chasing the Dream" at the Baseball Hall of Fame on April 25, 2009.

Aaron said on "The Dan Patrick Show" that he was deluged with racist hate mail and death threats as a Black player threatening the mark of one of the most popular white players to ever play the game. He said he kept all of the letters to remind his grandchildren how pervasive racism is in the country. George W. Bush, a one-time owner of the Texas Rangers, presented Aaron in 2002 with the Presidential Medal of Freedom -- the nation's highest civilian honor. In Aaron-like, workmanlike fashion, the Braves slugger quickly ended the drama just four games into the 1974 campaign.

In July 2000 and again in July 2002, Aaron threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, played at Turner Field and Miller Park now named American Family Field, respectively. He was the recipient of death threats and a large assortment of hate mail during the 1973–1974 offseason from people who did not want to see Aaron break Ruth's nearly sacrosanct home run record.

How To Decorate A Small Mobile Home Home Decorating Ideas

Try thinking outside the box, and you just might fall in love with your new small mobile home. Size of a small mobile home is about 500 square feet with one bedroom, one living room, and one bathroom. I was a coal miner’s daughter in southern WV but I live in North Myrtle Beach now. With the 2008 models, you may be better off just completely replacing the windows (especially if it’s those double pane windows).

decorating a small mobile home

Although it’s not always easy to build onto a mobile home, it’s still more acceptable than trying to downsize a home. There are plenty of ways to expand your home without needing to change the existing structure, such as a porch, deck, sunroom, carport, etc. You can rest assured that you pay for every extra square inch when you purchase a home. It doesn’t matter whether it’s real estate or a mobile home. An example could be that you may need a bigger lot which potentially, fees for moving and setting up your home will be higher.

Outdoor Living

You can easily learn how to decorate a small home with no money! Soon, you’ll be letting loose with the creativity and designing decor that will have your friends and family asking for your design secrets. Every manufactured home is unique in its structure and exterior design. Mobile homes can make homeownership easier to achieve.

decorating a small mobile home

And since mobile homes cost less per square foot than a stick-built home, you can get more space for your money. No worries here is a very crucial tip to follow while doing so. Use paint to zone spaces within the room and add plenty of plants to bring a feeling of life to the room.

Paint it over

It is difficult to find anyone willing to work on manufactured homes. If you have a regular long fluorescent light that’s sticking below from the ceiling , you should be able to remove the light and just use the original hole. It’s usually the same size as any other ceiling light hole. With such a large light there may be some screws or clips you’ll need to remove on the ends. Small patterns can make you feel pressured especially if the space is small.

We featured a couple ofCanadian manufactured homes here. Single wides usually have 3 points of access which includes a front door, a hallway, and a kitchen. Since all three points must be easily accessible it drastically limits how we can place furniture. Putting the furniture up against the walls is the most common furniture layout for single wides but as you’ll see below you do have other options.

Why should you consider a small mobile home?

The scale of a room simply means that the furniture should be the right size for the room and there should be balance . Some designers recommend the rule of 3s and that the majority of your furniture should not be above the bottom third of your wall height. Once you’ve gathered your supplies, you can create a beautiful, unique piece of wall art.Just use the glue or other adhesive to secure the paint swatches to the canvas. Thrift stores are always affordable, and you’ll be able to find cute, original decorations that you can’t buy at a modern-day craft store. The low prices make these deals too good to pass up.

The placement of the three most used appliances, the sink, stove, and refrigerator should create a clear triangle. Of the three points, the sink is the busiest so there should be easy access to it. Mobile home living rooms are typically small and usually have an odd traffic flow, or pathway, from one room to the next. There’s no doubt about it, mobile homeowners are a creative bunch! These mobile and manufactured homes are truly amazing. Yes, you can buy trim/molding at Lowes and they will even cut it for you in whatever lengths you need.

Do tiny homes appreciate in value?

In most models the kitchen, dining room, and living room all share a single space, meaning that single wides had open floor plans before open floor plans became cool. We’ve learned a few things after 7 years of sharing gorgeous mobile home remodels and interviewing homeowners. We’ve featured mobile home remodels done by famous professional interior designers and grandmothers of 8. With each and every story we learned something new about making a mobile home beautiful and you’ll find all those lessons below. Think of our decorating hacks for mobile homes as a cheat sheet to help you transform your house into a beautiful magazine-worthy home. In the South, single wide mobile homes usually have living rooms in the middle of the home along with the kitchen and dining space.

The majority of these single wide mobile home living rooms have an obvious focal point. The most popular focal points are bookcases, fireplaces, and accent walls. The most popular wall for the focal point is the shorter wall beside the hallway. You won’t need to fill your mobile home to the brim with expensive decorations in order for it to look cute, elegant, rustic, or whatever look you’re trying to create. Often, the simplest of decorations have the most graceful impact on their surroundings. So, don’t stress about having a budget for your interior decorating.

The uses the hallway as the focal point and balances it out with the matching mirrors. She doesn’t have a coffee table so there’s no traffic interference. The space of this home has been managed to the maximum and it achieves the goal of not feeling restrictive despite its size. The interior is all soft greys with touches of white and black to give it a sleek, modern feel.

You can kill two birds with one stone by having new insulation blown into your ceiling at the same time you get new lights installed. Recessed lighting hits all the marks for best low ceiling lighting–it’s affordable, it provides good lighting, and it’s unobtrusive. Since the fixture is in the ceiling, you’ve got walking clearance and a modern, sleek look. When you hear about painting your home most people think of walls but in our experience, your ceiling should be the first place you paint. Decorating the front of a mobile home is very exciting. By choosing the right color scheme and adding some key accessories to the porch area will make it look very inviting.

The house also features a separate laundry room making this building into a well-rounded home. Some home buyers desire to combine indoor and outdoor spaces to have the place of their dreams. This 586-square foot space costs under 50K and features a combined living room and dining room.

Although mobile homes are made to be lightweight, the walls still feature wooden studs, and producers often cover the structure with 1/4-inch paneling. Anniepaid $10,000 for this 1980 Skyline model single wide and spent another $5,000 to remodel it. The original mirrors make the room feel larger and helps bounce light around. The ceiling in this single wide living room is great!

It goes without saying that if you struggle to fit a family in your home, that finding the space to entertain could be even more challenging. Usually, only about a quarter of the home is reserved for a living room where you could host a social event or party. After your furniture and other fixtures, you’ll find the few hundred square meters soon disappear after just a small group of guests show up. One couple's search for their first home led them to a quirky neighborhood in California, where they fell for a double-wide in a tight-knit community of mobile homes. There are some great ideas on the FYI Network’s Tiny House Nation. Five-hundred square feet is about as big as they go.

A table lamp should be no more than 1.5 times the height of the table and and the shade should never be wider than the table. The living room above uses lamp height and symmetry well. Notice how the top of the floor lamp and the top of the table lamp are about the same height? Another way to differentiate zones in an open floor plan is with patterns. Studies have proven that the wall color in a restaurant can improve customer’s appetites which in turn increases revenue.

Country Roads Take Me Home: John Denver Inspired Lined Simple Journal Composition Notebook 6" x 9" 120 Pages by NOT A BOOK

It's a comfortable read with a great story with some extra info included on logging and making maple syrup as well but it blends with the story to enhance it. I like the secondary characters as well and look forward to more from this series. This brilliant picture book adaptation of the first hit song of John Denver is all about roots, family, and country. True to Appalachian style, Canyon portrays it all as if on a quilt, complete with little stitches between the fabric.

country roads take me home book

And Molly too...even Abby is a great character. Oh yeah, and this is only book #1...so many great story possibilities to come. Personally I'm really excited about this new contemporary series. Inez Kelley once again struck the perfect balance of entertainment, romance, angst, smexiness, and friendship that makes for a great contemporary romance. He grew up knowing that this land was his family's identity...his heritage, but at 16 he was helpless when they lost it all.

And I had a hard time connecting with the heroine. She came on strong and her "issues" were really nothing. It moved a bit slow, even though the "sexy times" started at about 30%, and while I know many enjoyed learning the details of maple syrup making, that is not why I read romance.

Take Me Home isn’t a sparkly kind of story. In Kayla and Matt we have two people who are both hurting, and whose wounds unfortunately make them vulnerable to exactly the kind of pain that the other inflicts.

So when I saw this book at my local library, I jumped at the chance to share it with our girls. Because the loss of the land that had been in his family for generations was so traumatic, followed so quickly by his father’s death in a car accident, Matt doesn’t want the job. Unfortunately, because he hasn’t told anyone about his past, he has to either confess what feels like a ton of old humiliation, or get the job done.

Faith Still Moves Mountains : Miraculous Stories of the Healing Power of Prayer by Harris Faulkner (2022, Hardcover)

The kind of simple, happy romance that makes you feel comfortable and content. It's the perfect story to read on your ereader when you're working and have to split your concentration a little. This is a really sweet and equal parts spicy romance with good characters and a heartwarming series of scenes against a breathtaking setting. Those who adore small town romances and rugged heroes should give this Contemporary Romance a try. There were a couple of things about this story that drew me in. The biggest being Matt and his painful struggle with his past, having locked all those old emotions away and never really dealing with them or with losing his father.

She needs help though and as much as it pains Matt to be around her new home and the reminder of his past, he agrees to help her. They also share one sexy night fairly early on after meeting each other and their relationship grows from there, turning serious before either of them knows it. Because of this book, now I have this song stuck in my head. The same illustrator and author has done all of these John Denver picture books, but honestly you almost wouldn't know it. Each book's illustrations are so different and so fantastic you would swear it was a different person each time. This is an achingly beautiful contemporary romance.

Now in a supervisory role as a forester for a logging company, Matt finds himself in charge of a new job - harvesting timber at his family's old farm. When he first goes out to the property, Matt and the new owner, Kayla Edwards, are very obviously attracted to one another. Kayla takes the initiative and asks Matt out, and I suspect many readers will find her straightforward attitude refreshing just as I did. Flirtation turns almost immediately into something much hotter. This is definitely one of those relationships where lust and attraction take center stage first, but love and friendship follow closely behind. Matt and Kayla are both enjoyable characters, and Inez Kelley writes this dynamic between them very well.

The writer did a good job of having me on the fence about who to sympathize with over Matt's choice to keep his past to himself. I totally got his reasons, but I also see where Kayla is coming from too. Relationships need honesty and that was the point of this one along with Matt's need to let go of the past. Kayla Edwards, owner of Mountain Specialty Spices, has been a wanderer all her life growing up an Army brat, but now she plans to sink down roots here in the beautiful mountains.

I spent a few years living not far from the state border, and I was familiar with the towns and cities mentioned throughout the story, and I have to say that the descriptions mostly rang true. The family was homeless for a time and the memories of that poverty filled him with shame but also spurred him on in his ambitions to be self-sufficient. My first book by this author and I enjoyed it.

Though they do have a subtle dominance in the bedroom. That’s how army-brat-turned-foodie Kayla feels about her new mountain hideaway. What’s more, the hottest lumberjack ever to swing an axe has agreed to manage her timber crop and get the old maple syrup operations back on tap. Matt’s ruggedly sexy ways and passion for the land have her falling hard. This is always a nice change--a true radio hit in a picture book.

Details about  John Denver's Take Me Home, Country Roads: A Sing Along Book for Toddlers and Ki

At first, I was not really impressed with “Take me Home”. I very much dislike women who throw themselves at guys, especially 10 minutes after meeting them. However, having read all her previous books and knowing that this author delivers powerful stories, I continued reading. I was not disappointed; Kelley did it again with this contemporary romance.

country roads take me home book

This is a personal preference, but I like the hero to go after the h and make more of an effort in the relationship. There are reasons behind his actions, but it still bugged me. My thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review this book. Tons of cool info about lumber biz and maple syrup biz. Too much sex for Vanilla Penny, but a solid start to this series. This book just wasn't to my personal taste.

Kayla discovers that she has the possibility of running a maple syrup business from her land as well and that would really get her finances back on track. Matt tells her its hard work and its risky, but she'll have his help, right? Although his familiarity with the land and his secrecy over his past niggles at her.

John Denver's Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver, Christopher Canyon, Paperback

But he needs to stay away because of the land. His boss overrules him on that and they slowly begin to work together and then become so much more, but Matt is hiding what her property means to him. It's not long before they are caught up in the beginning of a relationship. Matt can't tell Kayla about his family's past and his connections to her land because he has fought hard to get away from being that poor, evicted kid with nothing, but the clothes on his back. He doesn't want to see her pity or the disappointment thinking that he's a failure and can't provide. He worries a little especially when she admits that honesty is big with her because she has been used before, but he just wants to bury the past.

A picture book adaptation of John Denver's song Take me home, country roads, which celebrates the experience of arriving home to the countryside of West Virginia. The wonderful illustrations give readers, or singers, lots to look at. The song is published at the back and it would be fun to sing.

Take me Home Country Roads (John Denver & Kids!)

Inez Kelley does it again and gives us a touching, sexy contemporary in Take Me Home. It’s perfect for this time of year too, so you should definitely add it to your holiday reading lists. I loved, loved, loved the set-up for this story. This is my first official lumberjack read (even if Matt insists he's not a lumberjack...hehe.) Knowing that Inez Kelley had some expertise on the subject really showed.

country roads take me home book

You feel for Matt and what he went through as a child but Kayla is not without her own issues in her past. Along with this story you get some lessons on logging and trees that i found interesting. It didn't overpower the book which i appreciated. Fore me i enjoyed all the aspects of this book.

His work has been selected for many exhibits and publications including the Society of Illustrators, the Mazza Collection at the university of Findlay, Ohio, and the Natural History magazine. Both the conflict and the romance in this story is between Kayla and Matt. After a lifetime as an Army brat, growing up in bases all over the world, Kayla has purchased acreage in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia, because it’s the place that calls to her spirit.

Business seller information

I know nothing about timber management, but found all those details just as interesting as the rest of the story. The romance on this one was off to the races from the get-go. In fact, Kayla's aggressive flirting the moment they meet wasn't a hit with me especially when the story later reveals just how much she had been used in the past. I was confused by her strong come-on when there should have been wariness. I suppose it made the difference that she was the aggressor.

It’s been years, but he still hasn’t gotten over the pain of losing his family home and land after they were evicted when he was a young boy. He’s pulled himself up from that life, working hard, and having a steady job. Set in West Virginia, this book revolves around some of the traditional businesses that dominate parts of the state - logging and the sale of agricultural products.

It might be a little hard for children to understand because they don't have to travel far to get home. Fabulous family reunion with joyful pictures. All of my grandchildren will be getting copes of these John Denver books, the illustrations by Canyon or beautiful to say the least. 30 day return guarantee, with full refund including original shipping costs for up to 30 days after delivery if an item arrives misdescribed or damaged. Take Me Home, Country Roads, a book following the lyrics of John Denver's first hit song, is a great teaching tool for young readers about family and appreciation for the natural world around us. It’s stuff like this that makes reading a romance a little more interesting. My heart is so damn happy right now after finishing Take Me Home by Inez Kelley. I had very high expectations for this book and worried that I was expecting too much but I am never so happy to be so wrong in all my life. This book, quite simply put, is a perfect romance story and an exceptional start to a new series. Kayla grew up traveling around with her father who was in the service and she never had a place she could call home.

This reminds me why I love my home state of West Virginia. Dante's preschool class gave us this book when we were moving out of West Virginia. We played the Cd as we pulled out of our driveway and we bawled our eyes out listening to it. Still reminds me of the beauty of the place every time we pull it out to reread it. The pictures are well done and it really isn't that bad.

This is the first book in a trilogy of the Country Roads series by Inez Kelly. Oh it had it's happy moments as with most kids it doesn't take a lot to make them happy but they never had much money and seem to be short on other things. Then one day it all came crashing down completely when they lost the family home and the mountain property around it to foreclosure. Now years later he's a grown man and back in his hometown working for a logging company. He finds himself assigned to the very property his family owned all those years ago. Kayla was a Army brat and now as her parents are both gone now was looking for a place to call home and this mountain land called to her and fits her business ideas.

They’re often referred to as HUD homes, due to the fact that their construction is regulated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s code. This is a major benefit because you’re guaranteed a home that is built to rigorous safety and energy efficiency standards.
